Beyond video content and editing, thumbnail design plays a critical role in a video’s performance. The thumbnail and title work together to influence a key metric: Click-Through Rate (CTR).
When designing thumbnails, I start by understanding the core objective of the video and its title. From there, I identify visual elements that will reinforce the title and create a compelling, scroll-stopping combination where viewers feel as if they NEED to click on the video.
I also take into account the broader content landscape—this includes channel performance metrics, viewer behavior, competitor thumbnail trends, and what’s currently trending across the platform. This strategic, data-informed approach ensures the thumbnail not only looks good but drives real engagement.
